Starch
This food grade powder is very useful in the crafts industry, and its name is aptly derived from the old
English 'sterchen', which means 'to stiffen'. It can be used for papermaking, and helps to provide wet
and dry strength in the process. Add about 8-10% starch to the pulp to stiffen and hold the solution together.
Starch is a favourite with many school teachers, as it is a mild glue, and it makes powder tempera paints
thicker. It also improves flexibility and adhesion to paper and card - essential for glossy surfaces. It is,
along with Dala's Powder Glue, one of several adhesives used for the manufacturing of papier maché. |
